**The short answer:** Yes, you can use Codex with your ChatGPT plan in AppuBot: install Codex, sign in with your ChatGPT account once, and AppuBot finds it, with no API key. Your bots then run on Codex and its models, and AppuBot adds computer use in any app, Telegram, voice, memory and routines. Usage counts toward your ChatGPT plan like any Codex session.

## What is Codex?

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It works on your files, runs commands and carries a task through, and OpenAI offers it in the terminal, in code editors, on the web and in its own desktop app. Like Claude Code, it was made for software work and is capable well beyond it: anything that can be done with files and steps on a computer.

In AppuBot, Codex is the engine behind a bot. You give the bot a name, a job and instructions, and Codex does the thinking and the work.

## Which ChatGPT plans include Codex?

OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists Codex on ChatGPT **Free**, **Go** ($8 a month), **Plus** ($20 a month), **Pro** (from $100 a month, with $100, $200 and $500 tiers), **Business** ($20 per user a month billed yearly, $25 monthly) and Edu and Enterprise. Higher plans come with more usage.

AppuBot signs in the way Codex does: with your ChatGPT account, so your bots draw on your plan's included usage rather than paid API rates. AppuBot's Settings › Usage shows how much Codex was used on this computer, read locally.

## How do I set up Codex in AppuBot?

1. [Download AppuBot](https://appubot.com/download) and open it.
2. If Codex isn't installed, Settings › Agents shows OpenAI's installer for it.
3. Sign in with ChatGPT once. Codex opens your browser; pick your ChatGPT account. Already signed in to Codex on this computer? Nothing to do.
4. AppuBot shows Codex as ready. Pick it for a bot, then choose a model and how hard it thinks.
5. Start a chat. The bot is now Codex with a name, a job and a memory.

_AppuBot runs your own copy of Codex, so its updates reach your bots. AppuBot also checks for new versions and can install them for you._

## What does AppuBot add on top of Codex?

- **Computer use in any app.** A Codex bot can open an app, read its window and click, type and scroll in it, many steps at a time: copy the totals from a supplier's portal in your browser into a spreadsheet. See [computer use](https://appubot.com/features/computer-use).
- **Telegram and voice.** Send it a photo of a receipt on Telegram and it files it; send a voice note and it answers with one. Speech is heard and spoken on your own computer. See [Telegram](https://appubot.com/features/telegram) and [voice](https://appubot.com/features/voice).
- **Memory and routines.** Each bot keeps a memory you can read and edit, and can run a prompt on a schedule: on the first of each month, a reminder list built from last month's notes. See [memory](https://appubot.com/features/memory) and [routines](https://appubot.com/features/routines).
- **Teach mode and many bots.** Show a bot a task once and it saves the steps as a skill ([teach mode](https://appubot.com/features/teach)); make as many bots as you like, each with its own job, folder, chats and agent.
- **Approvals.** "Approve for me" uses Codex's own auto review for routine steps and asks you about the rest; "Full access" lets it work without asking. See [approvals](https://appubot.com/features/approvals).
- **Several ChatGPT accounts.** Add a work and a personal Codex profile and pick per bot.

## Codex in its own app vs in AppuBot

| | Codex on its own | Codex in AppuBot |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where you use it | Terminal, code editors, web, Codex desktop app | AppuBot's window, Telegram, voice, the menu bar |
| Best at | Coding in a project, cloud tasks | Everyday work in your apps and files |
| Using other apps | Through files, commands and tools you set up | Clicks and types in any app window, plus connected apps |
| Schedules | Depends on where you run it | Routines per bot, quietly or with a notification |
| Price | Your ChatGPT plan | Your ChatGPT plan; AppuBot is free in early access |

## Codex or Claude Code?

Both work well in AppuBot and you don't have to choose once: each bot picks its own agent. Many people put the plan they already pay for to work first. If you have both, try the same task on two bots and keep the one you like. See [Claude Code in AppuBot](https://appubot.com/agents/claude-code).
