**The short answer:** The best AI agent app depends on two questions: where should the work happen, and which AI do you already pay for? Cloud agents (Claude Cowork, OpenAI dots, Grok Bot, Manus, Meta Muse) keep working with your computer off but come with their maker's plan and model. Agents on your own computer (AppuBot, OpenBot, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, Claude Code) work with your files and apps and mostly use plans you already have. Pick the type first, then the app.

## The short list

| App | Price | Where it runs | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Cowork (Anthropic) | Claude Pro from $17 a month | Anthropic’s cloud, reaching your computer through the desktop app | Claude users who want reports, docs and slides done while away |
| OpenAI dots | ChatGPT Pro ($100 to $500), Business Premium, Enterprise | OpenAI’s cloud, plus a connected computer | ChatGPT Pro users who want one always-on agent |
| Grok Bot (xAI) | $30, $100 or $200 a month (The X Subscription) | One shared cloud computer | Teams of bots with no computer to keep on |
| Manus | Free (300 credits a day), Pro from $20 | Manus’s cloud, plus folders you allow | Big research, slides and sites |
| Meta Muse | Free up to a limit, then $20 or $100 | Meta’s cloud browser | Personal errands in the US and Canada |
| AppuBot | Free during early access | Your computer (Mac, Windows, Linux) | Work in your own desktop apps, with your AI plan |
| OpenBot | Free for noncommercial use | Your computer or a hosted server | Teams of coding and research agents |
| OpenClaw | Free, open source | Your computer or a server | A tinkerer’s assistant in WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage |
| Hermes Agent (Nous Research) | Free, open source; cloud hosting paid | Your computer, a server or Hermes Cloud | An open agent that learns skills, in many chat apps |
| Claude Code (Anthropic) | Claude Pro from $17 a month | Your computer (terminal, desktop app) or the cloud | Software work, and the engine under other apps |

## How do I choose an AI agent app?

1. **Decide where the work lives.** If it’s mostly websites and new documents, a cloud agent is fine. If it’s in desktop apps, files on your disk or tools on your office network, you need an agent on your own computer.
2. **Check which AI you already pay for.** Cloud agents bring their own plan and model. Agents on your computer, like AppuBot, OpenBot and OpenClaw, can use a Claude or ChatGPT plan you already have. See [use your Claude or ChatGPT plan](https://appubot.com/guides/use-your-claude-or-chatgpt-plan).
3. **Decide if it must run with your computer off.** Cloud agents do; local ones need the computer on (or a server).
4. **Look at how you’ll reach it.** Phone apps, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack: pick the one you already check.
5. **Check approvals.** An agent that acts in your accounts should ask first. See [how to let AI use your Mac safely](https://appubot.com/guides/let-ai-use-your-mac-safely).

## Cloud agents

- **Claude Cowork.** Anthropic's agent for work beyond code, now part of Claude. New tasks on Pro and Max run in Anthropic's cloud; it writes Docs and Slides, runs schedules and has computer use in beta on Mac and Windows. Claude only. [AppuBot vs Claude Cowork](https://appubot.com/compare/claude-cowork).
- **OpenAI dots.** One always-on agent on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer, reachable in ChatGPT, Slack, Teams and calls. Needs ChatGPT Pro or a business plan, and Pro excludes the EEA, UK and Switzerland. [AppuBot vs dots](https://appubot.com/compare/chatgpt-dots).
- **Grok Bot.** Named bots on one shared cloud computer, with phone apps, Slack and X; the model is picked for you. [AppuBot vs Grok Bot](https://appubot.com/compare/grok-bot).
- **Manus.** A general agent in a cloud sandbox, strong at research and building things, with a free daily allowance of credits and Telegram. [AppuBot vs Manus](https://appubot.com/compare/manus).
- **Meta Muse.** A personal agent for errands in Meta's cloud browser, on its app, the web and WhatsApp, in the US and Canada. [AppuBot vs Muse](https://appubot.com/compare/meta-muse).

## Agents on your own computer

- **AppuBot.** Many bots, each with a job, memory and its own Telegram bot, that work in any app on your computer by clicking and typing in its window. Runs Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Copilot, Cursor and OpenCode with your plans; [teach mode](https://appubot.com/features/teach), [routines](https://appubot.com/features/routines) and [approvals](https://appubot.com/features/approvals) built in. No phone app yet, and your computer has to be on.
- **OpenBot.** A team of agents that talk to each other in channels, with iPhone and Android apps and many model choices. Free for noncommercial use. [AppuBot vs OpenBot](https://appubot.com/compare/openbot).
- **OpenClaw.** A popular open-source personal assistant, reached through WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage and more, with plugins and computer use. Free; expect some setup. [AppuBot vs OpenClaw](https://appubot.com/compare/openclaw).
- **Hermes Agent.** Nous Research’s open-source agent that writes its own skills, runs anywhere from a laptop to Hermes Cloud, and talks through many chat apps. [AppuBot vs Hermes](https://appubot.com/compare/hermes-agent).
- **Claude Code.** Anthropic's own agent, built for software, which several apps here (AppuBot, OpenBot, OpenClaw) can drive with your Claude plan. [Claude Code in AppuBot](https://appubot.com/agents/claude-code).

## Where does AppuBot fit, honestly?

AppuBot is the pick when your work happens in desktop apps and you'd rather not pay for another AI plan: it's free during early access, works on Mac, Windows and Linux, and its [computer use](https://appubot.com/features/computer-use) is the centre of the app rather than an add-on. It is not the pick if you need an agent working while every computer you own is off, a native phone app, or open source. For those, a cloud agent, OpenBot or OpenClaw will suit you better.

## Questions

### What is the best free AI agent app?

It depends on how you work: AppuBot is free during early access and uses your existing AI plan; OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are free and open source; Manus and Meta Muse have free tiers with limits.

### Which AI agent apps can use the apps on my computer?

AppuBot, Claude Cowork (computer use in beta on Mac and Windows) and OpenClaw can click and type in desktop apps; OpenAI dots can use a connected computer while the ChatGPT app is open there.

### Which AI agents work when my computer is off?

Cloud agents: Claude Cowork, OpenAI dots, Grok Bot, Manus and Meta Muse. Agents on your own computer need it on, or a server.

### Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription with an agent app?

Yes, with several: AppuBot and OpenBot run Codex and Claude Code with those plans, and OpenClaw can reuse a Claude Code or ChatGPT login.

### What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers; an agent does the work, using tools, apps and files, and reports back. See [AI agent vs chatbot](https://appubot.com/guides/ai-agent-vs-chatbot).
