What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant, created by Peter Steinberger and now stewarded by an independent non-profit. Its pitch: it organises your inbox, sends emails, manages your calendar and checks you in for flights, all from WhatsApp, Telegram or another chat app you already use. It runs on your own machine (Mac, Windows or Linux) through a gateway that its desktop apps install for you, and its community has built a large library of skills and plugins.

It can reuse an existing Claude Code login on the same computer, sign in with ChatGPT, or use API keys from many providers and local models.

How do they differ in practice?

  • One assistant or many bots. OpenClaw is first of all one personal assistant that lives in your chats, with more agents if you configure them. AppuBot is built around many bots with one job each, made in a few clicks: accounting, research, a chief of staff that keeps the others on task.
  • Chat apps. OpenClaw wins on reach: WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, Teams and more than a dozen others. AppuBot answers on Telegram, with one Telegram bot per AppuBot bot, plus voice notes heard and spoken on your own computer.
  • Computer use. Both can see and control a desktop. OpenClaw's is a tool you turn on and grant permissions for, on macOS by default and through an experimental plugin on Windows and Linux. In AppuBot, computer use is the core: the bot works in an app's own window, mostly leaving your mouse alone, can work in the background, and you can teach it a task by doing it once.
  • Settings or a setup screen. OpenClaw gives you deep control through configuration, tool policies and plugins. AppuBot puts the choices people need on screen: agent, model, effort, approvals, connected apps per bot.

Where OpenClaw is stronger

  • Open source and free for any use, with a big community.
  • More chat apps, including WhatsApp and iMessage.
  • More model choice, including API keys from many providers and local models.
  • Phone apps for iPhone and Android that connect to your gateway.

Who should pick which?

Pick OpenClaw if you enjoy setting things up, want everything open, and want one assistant in WhatsApp or iMessage.

Pick AppuBot if you want a finished app with several bots for different jobs, built-in computer use in your desktop apps, approvals you can see, routines and memory you can read, without editing configuration.
